SPGP
partners with local farmers to provide more produce to those who are unable to
afford to purchase enough healthy food. (We have an agreement with farmers that
gleaned food may not be sold in any form.)
Volunteers are needed for gleaning,
distributing, market retrievals, phoning and office help. People of all ages are
welcome to participate in a harvest glean, which lasts approximately two hours.
Some gleans are kid friendly, please check with coordinator (see volunteer tips
for further info).
Volunteers
with limited income may take home a portion of what they glean for their immediate
family.

Adopt a school garden for the summer, and bring fresh produce to folks in need!
Only 1-2 hr commitment per week
Small Potatoes Gleaning Project works to provide increased access to fresh produce for folks in need. Most people know that we glean from farms, but there are other ways to do our work as well!
Volunteers are needed to fill in at several school gardens for the summer, to maintain (water & weed) and harvest produce, and take to a food bank or other emergency food program. Schools will resume these tasks in the fall.
See below for schedule for both Parkview and Geneva Gardens. To volunteer, Contact Lara 715-3061 or email laracguthrie@hotmail.com
Contact Rio for a delivery schedule for food banks or programs with location and hours: Rio Thomas glean@openaccess.org 966-2533
(The schedule can be emailed)
Volunteers are needed at Parkview Garden (near Cornwall Park, near the rose garden). This would be needed 2-3 times a week, and will take about an hour
July 1 - July 6
July 14 - July 20
July 21 - July 27
July 28 - Aug 3
Volunteers are needed at Geneva Garden for the following dates:
July 14-20
July 28-Aug 17
August 25-31
In the past we have just had volunteers water 2-3 times per week. It is a biointensive garden so needs somewhat less water than other conventional gardens.Custodians are on site at Geneva until 2:30 pm each day in case a volunteer were to need to use the bathroom, have a question, etc.
Directions:
Geneva's address is 1401 Geneva Street. You take Lakeway out of town, it turns into Cable Street when it reaches the Geneva neighborhood and Geneva School is right there. It is approximately 4-5 miles from the Lakeway Fred Meyer. Contact Lara 715-3061 or email laracguthrie@hotmail.com

| WHAT
IS GLEANING? Gleaning
is the ancient practice of gathering food left in the field after harvest.
PROGRAM MISSION:
To contribute to the development of a community
food system, focusing on equitable food distribution through gleaning, market
retrievals, educational outreach and promoting food self- reliance. Fresh
vegetables & fruit from local farms nourish us all: Small Potatoes
Gleaning Project bridges the gap between local surplus produce that would otherwise
be wasted and those who are hungry in Whatcom County. Thanks to the hard work
and generosity of farmers and volunteers, nearly 42 tons of nutritious produce
was gleaned and delivered in 2006.
